FOOT AND ANKLE UNIT
The joints and bony structures of the foot and ankle are exposed to continuous movement and bear the full weight of the body.
Thus, these structures are frequently injured, by overload or direct damage, in young people and athletes.
Also, given the continuous work they perform, they usually suffer deformations caused by chronic wear of the joints that form them.

Injury evaluation
These joints are subject to high wear and tear in virtually all patients, regardless of age .
In young people and athletes, it is common to find injuries caused by sports practices, poor support or bone trauma.
Surgical solutions
Among the advances in modern traumatology are ankle arthroscopy and microsurgery of the foot, which offer treatment alternatives that are much less harmful than traditional surgery.
New treatments have also been developed for chondral lesions and cartilage osteochondritis, such as the implantation of autologous chondrocytes.
Foot: common pathologies
It must be taken into account that the foot has 26 bones, 33 joints and more than 100 tendons, muscles and ligaments. For this reason, it can suffer from a large number of foot pathologies. Trauma, the use of inappropriate footwear or malformations can cause disorders in this area of the anatomy.
The appearance of sudden pain in the foot, inflammation of any of the joints that make up the foot or any change in this area, should make us consult a specialist. Any condition in the foot can compromise its functionality, so early attention is required.
Pathologies:
- Plantar fasciitis.
- Calcaneal spur.
- Tendinitis.
- Metatarsal fractures.
- Bone trauma.
- Metatarsalgia.
- Bunions or hallux valgus.
- Claw or hammer toes.
- Tailor's bunion.
- Flat feet and cavus feet.
Ankle: common pathologies
The ankle bone (talus) and the lower end of the two leg bones form the ankle joint. Ligaments, which connect the bones together, stabilize and support the joint. Muscles and tendons move it.
The most common ankle problems are sprains and fractures (broken bones). A sprain is an injury to the ligaments. Sprains can take a few weeks or up to several months to heal completely.
Injuries can also occur to other parts of the ankle such as the tendons, which attach the muscles to the bone, and the cartilage, which cushions the friction and impact of the joints.
Ankle sprains and fractures are common sports injuries .
Pathologies:
- Ligament sprains to varying degrees.
- Ankle fractures.
- Achilles tendinopathy.
- Achilles tendon rupture.
- Plantar fasciitis.
